Partridge in a crab apple tree.
This ruffed grouse picked its way around a crab apple tree eating last year's shriveled up fruit about 15 feet from where I sat in the sun on my deck this afternoon.
It was interesting to watch it balance delicately as the tiny branches bowed and bounced with every step, 15 feet above the ground. He managed the meal as if he has done this before.

A smoking saturday afternoon

Saturday was wonderful for basking in the sun while smoking a batch of cheese (extra aged cheddar and medium cheddar) as well as a basket of mixed nuts coated with some secret spices.
Here's what it looked like part way through the afternoon.

Brian Rooster

This picture of me on a duck hunting trip 55 years ago reminded me of my friend, Simon Rooster, here in Sioux Lookout.
Simon passed away 12 or 15 years ago. He was described as a "street person" by many, and the truth is that Simon, a local indigenous man, did hang out on the street - he wasn't tied down to any specific career - and slept some summer nights on the grass in the park.
I have cataracts and laugh at where they lead me sometimes. They certainly add a challenge as I, in my capacity as newspaper editor, try to do my proofreading. I am forever nodding my head up and down, side to side, blinking forcefully, and rubbing enthusiastically, to peek around and circumvent the little clouds between me and the printed page or computer monitor.
This afternoon while looking through a box of old photos I stumbled upon this picture - stuck to another, stained from some long ago spill of something not noticed at the time, and immediately thought of the notice I saw a couple weeks ago online, through cataract clouds, that shouted Brian Rooster.
Except for Simon, I've never known anybody named Rooster, so when I saw Brian Rooster my mind immediately zig-zagged to my buddy Simon in some wonderment.
Simon was a man of humor and grace, in his own way. I miss him. And I wondered, with some excitement, if he and Brian might be related.
I blinked and rubbed and swiveled my head up and down, side to side, to read more.
And then, there it was! In focus!
BRAIN BOOSTER. A shyster advertisement for some kind of potion guaranteed to make me smarter.
I won't be ordering the magic powder, but I'm thankful for the nudge that led me to remember a nice and unique man.

Looks to me like a wonderful Wednesday.

What's down the crack?

Did you ever come across a crack in the ice and wonder what's down below?
Squat down, shade your eyes, look deep, concentrate intently, breathe out slowly, appreciate the moment, and listen carefully...
This is what I discovered.

Right in the pit

I fell into a pit.
Two years ago I dug a pit for eventual use as a gray water system at camp. It's been sitting unused for two summers - a 2 feet deep, 4 feet wide, and 15 feet long blot filled with rain water and mud waiting for me to put in the required pipes and fill it in with sand and top off with dirt and grass.
As I sat in my robe, drinking coffee and admiring the chickadees at dawn, I noticed that the melting snow had allowed one of my propane tanks to shift position and it was now straining the hose connecting it to the house.
Immediately I pulled on a pair of boots, happy that the dogs were the only ones to see me dressed like a Halloween freak hustling out the door to reset the leaning tank.
Who knows what, if anything, was going on where the brain should have been. I plunged through the snow and a thin glaze of ice right into my trench. It was filled to the top with freezing slush and drain water, and I flopped around like a baby Beluga trapped in a tidal pool, boots full of excruciatingly bitter cold water and terry cloth robe soaking up the frozen goodness faster than a hungry sponge.
It's moments like that when I'm glad my mother didn't have to claim me. It was not a highlight of brilliance.
It did wake me up much quicker than a cup of coffee, though.

Results were a snooze

Last Saturday evening I relaxed by my pine wood fire in the Palace and began an hour and a half before sunset to take a panoramic picture every 10 minutes of the progression of the setting sun. It's often a kaleidoscope of clouds, colors, and monumental beauty.
Alas, the project didn't sparkle. That night's sunset was something wonderful to behold, but nothing spectacular to share in pictures.
My faithful pals Rosie and Boomer were beside me for the whole exercise and agreed the results were a snooze. They rated it "two snouts down."
Another weekend is approaching. Another chance is at hand. I'll try again and hope to share some sweet sunset sorbet in a couple days.

Warm enough for ice worms

A late setting moon during the half hour before sunrise is breath taking at this time of year. This is what I saw at quarter after 6 this morning from my deck in town.
I have tried to capture the subtle and serene beauty dozens of times over the past few years, but always am disappointed with the results. That is the case again this morning. I just don't seem to end up with a picture as pretty as the real scene. Will keep trying, though.
Temperature was -29 C (-21 F) at picture time, forecast to reach a scorching -8 C (+18 F) this afternoon. A couple more days of this heat is sure to bring out the ice worms.
